Medical Transition in 2123

An optimistic future, made in midJourney.

As I look out the window next to my desk, and off into the unknown, I find my mind wandering to thoughts I haven’t considered before. It seems like there’s always a chorus of people with “concerns”, singing the same old tune — in a hundred years, they say, we trans people will be seen as misguided, our transitions a blip in the grand scheme of things. My sense is that they aren’t seeing the future that I can see, though.

Okay! Let’s take a little stroll, into the future. Does 100 years sound good, babe? 2123? What does our transition look like there, a hundred years from now? Personally, I find this inquiry juicy af. Because right now, things might be limited in terms of medical transition, but I have a feeling things will change profoundly in that time.

Just imagine: 3D-printed wombs, uteri so beautifully crafted they are indistinguishable from one grown from nature. Little nanobots waltzing through our bodies, ushering in the dawn of non-invasive, cellular-level transitions. Or gene therapy so intricate it could weave our innermost identity into the very fabric of our being.

Am I being overly optimistic? I really don’t think so. The first medical transition was only 100 years ago, and hormones arrived on the scene in the 1950s. Look how far we’ve come in 2023! Technology is advancing at an exponential rate, and now that trans existence is more accepted, advances will only come faster.

Anyway, back to the future. :)

In this 2123, transitioning isn’t a harsh road laden with hormone therapies and surgeries. It’s a delicate dance, a transformation as graceful as a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, liberating us from the chains of dysphoria. It might even be as simple a stepping into an automated AI driven machine, and walking out the other side as another sex shortly after.

Imagine a trans feminine person with a 28 day cycle, where hormones are released by fully functioning lady parts. Imagine a trans masculine person sporting a trusty penis with blood flow, erections, the whole nine yards.

When transition reaches the point where the division between cis and trans is merely a reflection of our past, what will the transphobes say? They already pretend they can “tell the difference”, even when they can’t, but in 2123 that assertion will be rendered laughable.

By 2123, I long to see a world where ‘woman’ and ‘man’ are not something we need to fight to be, but instead they are beautiful reflections of our hearts, fully accepted and supported. A world where you and I are seen, acknowledged, and loved for being unapologetically ourselves.

I see a future where transition isn’t an artifact, but a glowing living beacon of progress. A future where acceptance, compassion, and diversity bloom like the most exquisite garden. That is the world I dream of, a world where we can spread our wings and soar in our own vibrant colors. We aren’t just surviving, we’re flourishing.
